New Construction in Old Fourth Ward Makes Moves Upward
Old Fourth Ward’s new addition, 619 Ponce, a four-story office building made from timber, is making its way upwards with vertical construction commencing.
Developer Jamestown announces to Atlanta Urbanize that the new building, built with Georgia pine, is locally sourced with hopes to reduce carbon footprints. The structure is cleaner to construct and “lends a ‘warm, healthy, and welcoming work environment for the people who will occupy the space,’” (Atlanta Urbanize, 2023). The building is targeting LEED certification as well as zero carbon operations.
On the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Glen Iris Drive, the four-story loft will offer ground-floor retail space and three levels of office space. The entirety made of timber, this is one of the largest mass timber buildings in Atlanta, according to Handel Architects.
“Most wood for mass-timber construction is currently imported from Canada, Austria, or Germany, but keeping the process regional helps tamp down on transportation emissions and overall environmental impact, company officials say,” according to Atlanta Urbanize.
At completion, this will add 85,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail to the famous Ponce City Market in Old Fourth Ward. 619 Ponce is expected to be completed sometime in 2024.
